Whatever it is, no doubt the source of inspiration is an unnamed typeface design by Paul Carlyle and Guy Oring from the book "Letters and Lettering" (1938).

Not that it would help with locating a digital version, but to add the missing link from Sorval’s great find: It was adopted for phototypesetting and shown by Solotype as Oring Title.

If it was a typeface, it doesn’t appear to have survived into the digital age.
