This is most likely lettering. Before 1970, large text on advertising, posters, and packaging was often lettered by hand, not with type. The best bet for achieving this look is to ask a lettering artist for help. James T. Edmondson would be particular handy with this sort of thing. 

If you must use a typeface, there are a few “fast fonts” out there, which achieve their speedy look with varying degrees of success:
