Offered by a number of foundries, but I like Elsner+Flake's cut: Century Schoolbook Italic

URW used to offer two versions, L and T, probably based on different sizes of the original. The latter comes closer to the version used on the cover. It’s narrower and has more flaring, see for example the terminals in r. The Elsner+Flake version suggested by Kevin is based on the same data as URW’s Century Schoolbook T Regular Italic.

I was just going on gut reaction to the previews I generated on MyFonts—nice to know there was an actual rationale behind it.
