Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is this place?
  • Just a simple site for getting help with typeface identification and recommendations.
  • Who runs it?
  • For now, just Stephen Coles, but he hopes to share it with an active community of moderators.
  • Why does it exist?
  • There are many Q&A sites and typography/design forums, but they aren’t well suited for simple font ID requests and answers. This site is purely dedicated to identifying type, with the minimal aspects necessary for that purpose.
  • Who can post a question?
  • Anyone. Registration is encouraged, but not required.
  • Who can post an answer?
  • Anyone with a confirmed account can post answers or comments.
  • Who can select the best answer?
  • Anyone with an “Expert” designation, earned through knowledgeable and constructive participation, can determine whether a typeface is correctly (or closely) identified.
  • What are these points all about?
  • This might as well be a game, right?

Or unnecessarily competitive — however you choose to see it.

In truth, points serve as a rough measure of community trust. Good questions, answers, and comments get voted up, which earns points. This table shows just how much each good deed is worth:

    Posting a question: + 1 points
Posting an answer: + 2 points
Having your answer selected as the best: + 10 points
Per up vote on your answer: + 3 points
Per down vote on your answer: - 3 points
Limit from up votes on each comment: + 10 points
Limit from down votes on each comment: + 3 points
Voting up an answer: + 1 points
Add for all users: + 100 points

For now, points are merely indicators of virtue that appear next to each user’s name. Later, they may translate into moderation privileges.
  • How is this site funded?
  • Your host has an affiliate relationship with certain font sources, including, FontShop, MyFonts, Typotheque, and YouWorkForThem. (Other vendors with such a program are welcome.) Links to those sites generate a modest income which supports the hosting, moderation, and maintenance of the site. If you appreciate the service, you can also make a direct donation via PayPal or Square Cash to keep it running. The first income will go straight to Webtype for supplying Christian Schwartz’s and Font Bureau’s Amplitude, the typeface used for the logo and all the text on this site.
  • Why is this site so ugly?
  • It was slapped together in about 12 hours. I am admittedly inept at HTML/CSS, so improvements will come … but slowly. If you feel like pitching in, please do!
